Following first semester’s trend, the Student Programming Board has big plans for Pepperdine students in the next few months.
The committee, comprised primarily of juniors and seniors, has a variety of special events and activities projected for this semester.
One upcoming event is Battle of the Bands. The competition, consisting of only Pepperdine bands, will take place Friday, Feb. 3 at 8 p.m. in Smothers Theater. Tickets are on sale at the Smothers box office for $3.
The committee also plans sporting events.
Although Pepperdine doesn’t have a football team, the SPB is doing their part to bring the game to our Malibu campus. This Saturday, students from California will go head to head against Texas in a flag football competition. The game starts at 1 p.m., but food and drinks will be served to attendees beginning at noon.
SPB members, particularly Spirit and Ongoing Events Coordinator Darnell Brisco, are excited about the event and said they expect a good turnout.
“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” Brisco said.
Freshman Andy Frank said he is glad that his home state will be represented.
“I am looking forward to Texas beating California, like the Rose Bowl,” he said.
Many Pepperdine students are not aware that SPB is responsible for the once-a-semester concerts that occur on campus. Last semester’s concert by Jimmy Eat World was organized by senior David Brooks, SPB’s concert coordinator, and his team. Because of the concert’s success, Brooks and his committee are looking forward to this semester’s concert, but at this point are unable to release the name of who will be performing.
In addition to these special events, SPB is responsible for weekly activities that occur at Pepperdine. Senior Jonathan Patty, Media and Technology Coordinator, is in charge of the bi-weekly movies shown in Elkins Auditorium.
Movies scheduled for February and March include “The Legend of Zorro,” “Rent,” “Harry Potter,” “Pride and Prejudice,” “King Kong,” “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” and “Fun with Dick and Jane.”
Coffeehouse Coordinator Lianne Hope organizes activities for Coffeehouse most weeks. “As challenging as the coordinating Coffeehouse position proves to be, the end result is always quite rewarding,” Hope said. “The easy part of my job is finding talent. Most student musicians are more than willing to take the stage in order to promote themselves.”
Carolyn Simpson, one of the weekend event coordinators, said about last semester, “Our best events were the ones that were planned where people just stumbled across them. I hope that we can have a higher average attendance at each event.”
Upcoming events include Battle of the Bands, Moustache Day on Feb. 9, Homecoming from Feb. 17 to Feb. 19 and much more. To learn more about these events, students and faculty can visit the new Web site studentorgs.pepperdine.edu/home.
