Fall classes began today, but the student leaders of Pepperdine’s SGA and SPB have been busy during the summer months preparing programs and events for the school year.

SGA has been on campus for more than two weeks, training, scheduling appointments with administrators and Pepperdine departments and participating in New Student Orientation events such as Frosh Follies.

“The main thing we want to stress this year is that we are a voice for the whole student body, so we don’t just want to promote our own agenda,” said SGA President Kevin Mills. Mills said that SGA has begun working on several initiatives, mostly involving cooperation and partnerships with various departments and groups on campus.

Mills said SGA leaders will be focusing mainly on elections during the first weeks of school.

Elections will be held for a variety of positions in all class levels Sept. 13 Students who wish to run for SGA offices will be able to pick up packets starting Sept. 6 in TCC 260.

“This is the first year since I’ve been here that the majority of the elected positions will be elected in the fall,” Mills said.

As of this semester, the InterClub Council, which is responsible for relationships and funding for student clubs on campus, will be a separated from SGA. As a result, the SGA budget for this fall has been decreased.

SGA is also planning to establish an Executive Council this year, involving representatives from Greek organizations, SGA, the ICC and other groups on campus.

The Executive Council would be a means of coordination between various student organizations but would not be a legislative body

Members of SPB, which is responsible for organizing programs on campus, have been busy planning various events for this semester.

“We got to school a week and a half early so we could have several events planned when the school year starts,” said Carolyn Simpson, a weekend events coordinator for SPB.

SPB plans to host one coffee house per month, usually in Elkins Auditorium, where students will be able to perform poetry and music

“We set up couches, so it’s a more homey feel,” Simpson said. The SPB calendar will be available online at wavenet.pepperdine.edu.
