April Fool’s Day was a busy day for WCC baseballers, as six squads took the diamonds to see if they could get up their early season win totals.
In the day’s most exciting match-up, the Santa Clara baseball team went up big early but had to hold on to defeat St. Mary's College by a 10-7 score Tuesday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field in Moraga, Calif.
SCU starter John Redmond improved to 2-3 on the season after giving up two runs, both of which were unearned, on six hits to go along with one walk and four strikeouts in five full innings of work.
SMC starter Gabe Palma saw his record fall to 1-1 on the year after giving up five runs on seven hits in two full innings of work. Matt Yourkin gave up five runs on five hits but struck out five in his six innings of relief.
With less than two weeks remaining until the West Coast Conference Tennis Championships, the host team University of San Diego Toreros won four of six singles matches today to earn a 4-3 victory over visiting Texas Tech.
After losing the doubles point to start the match, USD, which defeated Pepperdine earlier in the season, responded with wins at No. 1, No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 singles. The WCC tournament will be April 11-13.
